Demo dogpark was great fun for all.

This spring has been a very productive time for us at The Tri-City Dog Park Society. The Columbia Park Dog Park has been approved and they are starting to clear the land. We have hopes that this park will be open for use by fall. Additionally, the Richland Park and Recreation commission approved the formation of two new pilot parks. One at Badger Mountain Park in South Richland which will be a fully fenced community park and one at Lawless Park in Richland which will be a leashes optional hiking area. Lawless park is the wilderness park that extends between Carmichael Middle School and Fred Meyer. Both parks are expected to be ready by August. These parks will be put in for a trial period of 6 months and if all goes well they will become permanent sites and pave the way for additional community parks. The Tri-City Dog Park Society will be contributing funds as well as volunteer hours to make these projects a success.

The Tri-City Dog Park Society formed over 3 years ago with the dream of helping to establish dog parks that would benefit our community. With our dreams finally becoming a reality, it is important that each of us help make these parks a success and become stewards of these amenities which will benefit so many of us. Your support over these years has been greatly appreciated and we continue to rely on you so that we may do the work of promoting, establishing and, ultimately, maintaining dog parks for our community.

I hope to see you next weekend!

Wag on!

The Tri-City Dog Park Society 2007 Review

2007 was another busy year for TCDPS!  Lots of progress has been made toward getting a permanent dog park in the Tri-Cities.  Currently, the Corps of Engineers and the Confederation of Tribes have agreed to the possibility of a dog park in Columbia Park.  The archaeological survey is underway and unless something significant is found, the dog park is expected to proceed.

Here’s how we worked to bring about our goals this year:

The Tri-City Dog Park Society

  • was featured in four TV news reports.
  • was featured seven times in the Tri-City Herald ( two articles, one opinion piece, one events listing, and three letters to the editor)
  • hosted five demonstration dog parks at area parks (one in Leslie Groves, three in Howard Amon and one in  Columbia Park)
  • had over 500 visitors to our demonstration dog parks
  • hosted a dog wash and yard sale fundraiser
  • participated in the Evening of Giving fundraiser and hosted a booth at Columbia Center Mall
  • made one presentation at the Kennewick Library
  • participated in the Amazing Animals week at WSU kids camp
  • made two presentations to Park and Rec boards
  • hosted one Halloween Party at the October Dog Park
  • hosted one members only demonstration dog park and holiday party in December at Sagemoor Kennels
  • currently has 52 members including 24 new members
  • has gathered over 1,800 signatures of support for a dog park!

The coming year poses some new challenges for TCDPS.  We will be deciding how to use the money we have raised when a dog park goes into development.  TCDPS has currently raised over $8,000 to help bring a dog park to the Tri-Cities, and if an area park goes into the building phase we will be seeking additional donations and larger grants and sponsorships.

About us:

The Tri-City Dog Park Society was formed in March of 2005 by a group of citizens who wanted to establish off-leash recreational areas for dog owners.  With an estimated 50,000 dogs in the Tri-Cities area, it is evident that there is a huge need for a dog park here.  Many new residents to the area have lived in cities that provided off leash dog parks and are disappointed to find no such options in the Tri-Cities. TCDPS has been actively working to raise support for this cause through public education, pet fairs and news media.  In May of 2005 TCDPS put together a petition to collect signatures of support for a dog park in the Tri-Cities area.  In less than a year TCDPS has collected almost 1,000 signatures of support!  In the spring of 2005 the Richland Parks Department sent out their annual survey.  Due in part to educational efforts of TCDPS, the number one requested new amenity was a dog park!  Since that time, The Tri-City Dog Park Society had been actively working with Richland, Kennewick and Pasco Park departments to evaluate potential sites for a dog park. TCDPS is also actively fundraising to help with the cost of establishing a dog park once a suitable location is found.

Currently, Kennewick is pursuing plans to put a dog park in Columbia Park!  There are many steps that need to be taken before the park becomes a reality, but TCDPS is ready to consult with park design and provide funding for construction projects.  Through the hard work of TCDPS and local parks departments the dream of bringing a dog park to the Tri-Cities is within reach.
